Ballet: Lower Grades

Nursery and Preparatory

Starting around 3 years old in Nursery - our littlest dancers enjoy a non-syllabus, creative class to introduce them to movement in a safe and developmentally-appropriate framework. Classes aim to enable the child to achieve movement capability with a strong use of imagination.

Moving on from there; the Preparatory Class further develops and improves on the fundamental movement control and co-ordination abilities in a younger child. Classes are creative and imaginative and are moving toward the start of the Syllabus programme.

Pre-Primary in Dance

The first ‘rung’ on the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus ladder! This level incorporates technical exercises with more free-form movement sequences to develop the child’s stability and control. Exercises and Sequences are imaginative, engaging and encourage the young dancer to develop a sense of performance. The students learn the set syllabus exercises and Dances and work towards the option of entering for the Pre-Primary in Dance Award.

Primary in Dance

This level provides a broad practical dance education and further develops the child’s technical, musical and performance skills. Classes incorporate Classical ballet technique and neo-classical/free movement styles. The opportunity is available to enter for the Primary in Dance examination - the first exam where the students go in without a teacher and are expected to perform a few exercises as a solo.
